The Nordic Quest

14.05 – 25.05.2024
Orsa, Sweden

Event summary

Can you catch the majestic essence of rural, everyday life in a documentary? It might be a difficult task but we intend to find out together with you. In a world where the skills to properly catch the world around us on camera is getting more and more available to everyone we want to give you the chance to gain more insights about this very topic.

Next to the filmmaking, we will also dive deeper into rural culture and its values that impact cultures across Europe. In many European countries, young people are moving to the big cities, away from the rural areas that play a significant role in the preservation of the local culture. As a result that very culture is dying. We want to give you the tools to create a documentary exploring some of the reasons for this happening.

Therefore we delve into the art of filmmaking, and direct our lenses on the rural areas of Sweden, recording the difficulties and the blessings of living in them. Our goal is not only to educate and create a dialogue around documentaries and cultural topics but also provide inspiration and  experiences that you can carry with you beyond the scope of this program.

We welcome young adults from Estonia, Greece, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden to join us on an unforgettable 9-day journey set in the beautiful landscapes of Sweden. Over the course of nine days, you’ll participate in a variety of activities ranging from filmmaking sessions set amidst rural Orsa to team building activities and some surprises.

The exchange provides a unique opportunity for you to meet, share and learn from like-minded individuals across Europe, whilst fostering an environment of respect, inclusion, and community. So, whether you’re participating in a group discussion or recording swedes in everyday-life, you’ll create connections that last a lifetime.

Join us on this fun journey where we peel back the layers of rural areas of Sweden, develop a deeper understanding of filmmaking, and immerse ourselves in the soothing essence of  Swedish forests. Be ready to challenge yourself, grow, and discover something new. Sweden awaits you!

Attention!
Please be aware that the primary goal of this program is to facilitate learning and provide new experiences. Achieving a highly professional documentary is not our main focus. We invite participants of all skill levels, from seasoned filmmakers to those just starting out. Various types of cameras and equipment will be utilized during the program; while we will supply some equipment, participants are also encouraged to bring their own cameras to potentially enrich the project’s outcomes.

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the same location every day and we are also providing vegetarian options!
Although most of our activities will be held outdoors, some will take place in our shared indoor room. Discover non-formal learning!

What can you expect?

Filmmaking as an art form

In this project we are putting a huge emphasis on filmmaking, with the idea that it is not only a creative and expressive art form but also a valuable tool for learning, and communication. By making and sharing filmprojects participants can document, analyze and express their realities and perspectives, as well as connect and interact with others. The program also seeks to foster a sense of curiosity, adventure, and belonging among the participants, as well as to promote dialogue and understanding among different communities.

Making Friends and Learning

Filmmaking is not only a creative and expressive art form but also a valuable tool for making friends and learning. Engaging in filmmaking projects you can explore various topics, such as identity, culture environment, history and social issues, and share your perspectives and experiences with one another. The hope is that this will come to great aid when exploring the specific topics of this project and creating a documentary of it: Young people are leaving the rural areas.

Outdoor Exploration and Adventure

Sweden’s natural beauty is the perfect backdrop for going on hikes and regular walks. Filmmaking is the perfect companion for these activities, as it allows you to capture the beauty, diversity, and thrill of the natural world. You will get plenty opportunity to catch wondrous things on your cameras when we go hiking and maybe even boating. Get ready for an exciting journey beyond the venue! We’ll lead you along scenic trails where you can soak up fresh air, admire the plants and animals, and reconnect with nature. These outdoor adventures aren’t just about exercise; they’re also a great opportunity to reflect on our filmmaking discussions

Have fun while developing yourself!

Social program

In addition to our daily activities, we’ve designed an engaging social program for each evening. A highlight of this program is our cultural nights, where teams from each participating country get a chance to share their unique cultures. Whether it’s through games, songs, dances or any other creative medium, these evenings will be rich with learning and laughter. While we aim to foster new friendships and mutual understanding, we also recognize that social situations can feel overwhelming for some. Please know that we’re committed to making these activities as comfortable as possible for everyone. Our program encourages participation, but never at the expense of your comfort. Each activity is meant to be enjoyable and inclusive, providing a warm and relaxed environment where you can connect with others at your own pace.
