The Island Quest

03. – 14.10.2022
Syros, Greece

Event summary

Ever wondered what everyday life could be on a small island? Have you ever visited a famous tourist destination during the off-season? What about life beyond the picturesque postcards? Rural areas often lack services, employment opportunities, leisure activities and other things that you can typically find in bigger cities. As such, it is not uncommon to see young people chasing life in more urbanised areas, many times out of the need for an adequate quality of life. But is this all there is to it?

In this project, we aim to shed light on such issues, inspiring change and having a positive impact on rural communities. Participants from Estonia, Slovakia, Sweden and Greece will get to give their own answers by actively interacting with the locals while capturing and sharing their stories through documentaries. The goal is to raise awareness about the challenges many rural areas face as well as to promote the perks of life on a Greek island. At the same time, participants will acquire hands-on experience of the whole process of filmmaking, from pre-production to editing and sharing a documentary of their own. We hope to not only have an impact on the local community but also inspire the participants to turn their focus on rural areas of their own countries and abroad. So, are you up for it?

Where you'll be staying

Venue & Location

This Youth Exchange will take place in Syros, an island in the heart of the Aegean sea in Greece. The venue is located in the village of Galissas, 5km from Hermoupolis, the capital of Syros and only 3 minutes walking from the beach. Our participants will be accommodated in comfortable vintage-style timber huts and triple rooms each outfitted with three single beds, with a nice view of the surrounding area. All the “huts” are equipped with modern amenities yet retain a vintage style and offer a camping experience without compromising on comfort.
There is an open theatre where the workshops will take place. During October it should still be quite warm in Syros, hopefully, the weather is on our side, and we will be able to show you the beauty of this place as much as possible.

The venue also includes:
  • Swimming Pool
  • Yoga/Meditation area
  • Outdoor theatre
  • Cozy outdoor spaces to work and facilitate our activities
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the same location every day. We wish to promote different Mediterranean dishes, and thus along with our ongoing efforts to be more sustainable, the main diet during the project will be Vegetarian. We will also try to accommodate Vegan preferences.

We genuinely believe that this is the perfect place to thoroughly enjoy the company of new-found friends, big healthy doses of clean, fresh air, and participating in the planned activities. The Anassa Cycladic Village is also near some hiking trails and many more beautiful sites. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a unique and picturesque part of a Greek Island.

Discover non-formal learning!

What can you expect?

The Program

We will hit it off with some ice-breaking activities, and we will gradually dive into the topic. Our sessions will focus on unleashing your creativity and developing your technical skills as well as interacting with the local community, in order to create your very own documentaries for the world to see. Altogether you will not only acquire filmmaking skills but also expect to return home with possibly many new ideas and skills that you were not expecting to acquire.

The Networking

What would an international project be without the opportunity to get to know lots of incredible and inspirational people? Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, you can be sure to meet valuable contacts for your future work and new friends that you will stay in touch with long after the event has finished. All of that while surrounded by calming and picturesque Greek nature.

The Unexpected

While youth exchange projects are certainly an excellent opportunity to gain new knowledge and diversify your skill set, they can be more than that. You are more than welcome to bring added value to the sessions by sharing your own experience and insights. It’s your chance to make the event even more helpful and memorable while leaving a mark. After all, you never know what can come out of it.

Have fun while developing yourself!

Social program

In Youth Europa, we traditionally devote the evenings so that each national group can present different aspects of their culture. In order to do so, please seize this opportunity to prepare an original and fun presentation that will represent your cultural background to the rest of the participants. Let your creativity flow! It’s recommended that you bring some typical food, snacks or drinks for others to taste during the intercultural evening.
