Event summary

Communication and language have been the cornerstone of human civilization, and some even claim it’s what differentiates humans from other species on the planet. To communicate is to make ourselves understood and to understand others, it’s what allows us to build human connection. Yet talking is not necessarily the same as communicating. Talking doesn’t guarantee understanding nor connection, for that we need honest and clear communication, along with open ears and an open heart. This serves as the starting point for the “Lost in Translation” project, which seeks to explore meaningful communication.

Communication isn’t something that just happens naturally, but is a skill that’s developed through time, energy and experience. The project aims to shed light on this skill through investigating how to listen, what to say and how to say something. We will explore topics related to active listening, communication styles, misunderstandings (and more), through both fun and creative ways but also more reflective exercises. The youth exchange focuses on what is said aloud, but also investigates and invites introspection by giving you space to reflect on your own communication habits. You might leave with a new perspective, a useful insight, or simply some fun memories.

We welcome young adults from Estonia, Greece, Czech Republic, Spain, and Sweden to join us on this 10-day journey set in the beautiful landscapes of Sweden. Bringing together young people from across Europe, the exchange creates a space to learn and share experiences in an atmosphere of inclusion and respect.

Where you'll be staying

Venue & Location

The venue is located in Orsa, a charming village surrounded by a beautiful forest and with a peaceful lake nearby. It’s a cozy and relaxing place that connects you with nature. You will be accommodated in 4-5 people rooms inside wooden, traditional cabins. The venue also offers a big shared room where we’ll have some of our group activities and gatherings. There are also quiet spots around the venue to recharge whenever you need a peaceful time alone. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the same location every day. If you are a vegetarian we also provide vegetarian options!

What can you expect?

Methods of Learning

During this project the workshops will focus on non-formal learning, and learning through different methods (art, discussion, team work, games etc). We are committed to making a varied and interesting program that keeps you engaged. The project sessions will involve, as mentioned, exercises connected to topics such as active listening, clear communication, expressing yourself, and so on, and will explore the gap between what we mean and what others hear. No two workshops will look the same – some will be more practical, fun and creative, others more reflective or discussion-based.

Making Friends and Learning

Aside from the program itself, youth exchanges offer opportunities for creating new connections with other individuals. Connection, friendship and intercultural understanding is an important aspect for every project, and we aim to actively create such spaces where they can thrive. Meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds, you’ll have the chance to exchange stories, perspectives and a little bit of your world with others, + take a little bit of theirs with you.

Outdoor Exploration

Sweden’s natural beauty is the perfect backdrop for going on hikes and regular walks. We’ll lead you along scenic trails where you can soak up fresh air, admire the plants and animals, and reconnect with nature. The nature surrounding the venue is a great way for finding and grounding yourself. Sometimes the best conversations happen away from four walls, so expect the outdoors to be just as much a part of the experience as the program itself.

Social program

In addition to our daily activities, we’ve designed an engaging social program for the evenings. A highlight of this program is our cultural nights, where teams from each participating country get a chance to share their unique cultures. Whether it’s through games, songs, dances or any other creative medium, these evenings will be rich with learning and laughter. While we aim to foster new friendships and mutual understanding, we also recognize that social situations can feel overwhelming for some. Please know that we’re committed to making these activities as comfortable as possible for everyone. Our program encourages participation, but never at the expense of your comfort. Each activity is meant to be enjoyable and inclusive, providing a warm and relaxed environment where you can connect with others at your own pace.

How to get to the event?

Travel

The arrival day of the project is the 17th of August, while the departure day is on the 28th of August. Participation in the full duration of the event is mandatory (i.e you cannot arrive later than the 17th or depart earlier than the 28th). To get to the venue you can fly to Stockholm, where a bus will be arranged to take everyone to Orsa. We will provide more travelling information once you have been selected to join the project. We will cover your travel expenses up to a certain limit, as the travel reimbursement budget depends on the travel distance. You will receive your reimbursement as soon as possible after you have provided us with all the documents (boarding passes, receipts etc). If you’re economical, it’s possible to get your full travel expenses covered!

Spain (3000-3999km): 480€
Greece (2000-2999km): 300€
Czech Republic (500-1999km): 210€
Estonia (500-1999km): 210€
Sweden (100-499km): 130€

*transportation between Stockholm and Orsa is arranged by us and is already accounted for in the reimbursement limit

As a participant of this event, you will receive YouthPass – a certificate of non-formal education recognized all across Europe that allows you to describe what you have done and learned. How the heck is this so cheap?

This project is supported by Erasmus+ program. This enables us to keep the participation fee very low and even remove it for people who are in financial difficulties. We know it sounds too good to be true, feel free to check out the reviews:)

Not at all. We try to focus on non-formal learning methods. This means that all activities are interactive and you will usually work in groups.

What are the participation requirements?

Everyone who comes from the eligible countries and is 18 to 30 years old is welcome to apply. There are no prerequisites, we actually welcome people who have no prior experience at all. Also, this event is not political. We don’t care if you hold conservative or more liberal views. Just be friendly and cooperative, we’re all here to learn, make friends & have fun!

How do I sign up?

Click the “apply now” button below if the deadline has not passed. Fill the form and answer all the questions as sincerely as possible. We will get in touch with you if you have been selected. Make sure that @youtheuropa.org mails don’t go to your spam!:)

How are participants selected?

The participants are selected based on their motivation and interest in the topic. There is no catch, you just need to be sincere and honest in your application. Also, if you’re not selected in this project, it’s more likely that you get selected for the next ones.

How do I buy the tickets and plan my trip?

Questions such as this one will be answered by the organisers or your group leader. Don’t worry, we will help you find the best possible option!

What kind of travel cost will be covered?

We will cover your trip to and from the project destination. There are some limits that apply, this is based on your travel distance. These limits are mentioned in the information above. If you buy the tickets early enough, it’s common to get your travel 100% covered.

How & When do I get my travel reimbursement?

After the event, all participants will fill the reimbursement form where you will be asked to upload the travel cost documents (itinerary, boarding passes, invoices etc.). The reimbursement process usually takes between 1-2 months. Remember that we will help you on every step of the way.

Do I have to speak in front of a group or lead workshops?

Nope. You will not be forced to do anything that you’re not comfortable with. But it’s definitely a great place to step our of your comfort zone. This is going to be a journey in your personal development:)
