The facilitator asks participants to stand up and tells them that he/she is going to give them instructions, which are “Up”, “Down”, “Left”, or “Right”. The facilitator is saying these words in random order and encourages the participants to follow their instructions. He/She starts at a normal pace and slowly increases it. After a short while (ca. 1 minute) he/she changes the meaning of the word “Up” to “Down” and vice-versa. The meaning of “Right” and “Left” will not change. He/She continues to give the instructions as before, only now some participants will make mistakes and everybody will laugh about it.
Reflection:
If you wish to, you can start a discussion about any similarities with common life experiences, e.g. “It is fairly difficult to forget the old way of doing things while learning new concepts.”
