Funky Chicken

Introduction:

In this activity, everybody needs to be standing up with enough space for movement and with a good view of the facilitator (preferably someone with a good voice).

  • It starts with you shouting: “1, 2, 3, 4!” and participants shouting back: “5, 6, 7, 8!”.
  • You then shout: “Let me see your funky chicken!” (or another variation, as presented below).
  • Right after that, you do the dance (in this case “Funky Chicken”) and the participants try to catch up with you.
  • It then repeats from start, but this time with another variation.

The dances:

1. Funky Chicken
Right after you shout “Let me see your funky chicken!”, you start turning on the spot (doing a 360°) to the left dancing like a chicken (with arms like wings doing the flying movement), while shouting: “Fuuunky chicken, fu-funky chicken, hey!”. On the “Hey!” you simultaneously do a clap. Then you repeat the same while turning on the spot to the right.

2. Cappuccino
Right after you shout “Let me see your cappuccino!”, you turn on the spot to the left dancing like you are drinking a cappuccino (with your right hand doing the “telephone” sign and going up and down), while shouting: “Caaappuccino, ca-cappuccino, hey!”. The same to the right (with your left hand). Don’t forget the clap.

3. Ballerina
Right after you shout “Let me see your ballerina!”, you first put the right index finger on your head and turn like a ballerina (to the left), then your left index finger (and turn to the right), while shouting: “Baaallerina, ba-ballerina, hey!”.

4. Michael Jordan
Right after you shout “Let me see your Michael Jordan!”, you start dribbling the ball on the spot with your right hand under your left leg, then with your left hand under your right leg, while shouting: “Miiichael Jordan, Mi-Michael Jordan, hey!”. You don’t turn.

5. Michael Jackson
Right after you shout “Let me see your Michael Jackson!”, you do the moonwalk in one direction, then in the opposite one, while shouting “Miiichael Jackson, Mi-Michael Jackson, hey!”. You can add arm movement, as well. You don’t turn.

The energizer goes like this:

1, 2, 3, 4! (5, 6, 7, 8!)
Let me see your funky chicken!
Fuuunky chicken, fu-funky chicken, hey!

P.S.: You can be creative and add more! 🙂

Things to keep in mind…
  • It’s important to keep it going once you start after the introduction, so give it a little practice before using this activity.
  • You might want to briefly show the variations to the participants while explaining this activity because it’s quite easy to get lost later.
  • Everybody needs to both dance & shout with you after you say “Let me see your XYZ!”, to get the right energy out of it.
  • Note that the clap serves as an interchange, which means you should turn/dribble/moonwalk as fast as you are shouting.
