Creativity in Youth: Media Spotlight

Event summary

Whether you are walking down the street listening to a podcast, reading the news, or scrolling down the Instagram feed, there is no avoiding media in this day and age. The digital era we’re living in has brought a wealth of information at our fingertips. So much in fact, that it might feel overwhelming and increasingly difficult to navigate the media landscape without falling prey to misinformation, disinformation and manipulative marketing techniques or simply without getting buried in heaps of mediocre content.

With new media becoming inextricable parts of our daily lives, we need to brace ourselves and get media literate. For us, media literacy is not only about being responsible and critical as a consumer, but also about being an innovative contributor. That’s why this youth exchange embraces both sides of the coin:
· we are going to work on developing the skills necessary to critically analyse and evaluate information, recognize manipulative techniques, and stay safe online;
· and by developing and practicing our creativity and digital skills, we will turn ideas into action by creating valuable and worthwhile content.

This project will gather 40 young adults coming from Estonia, Greece, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden who want to develop themselves more in the topics of media literacy and creativity, make a difference in their communities, and make memories all while being surrounded by wintertime mountains and a great group of international people. Where you'll be staying

Venue & Location

The venue is located in a picturesque environment of the Súľov rocks, in a village nearby the capital town of the region, Žilina. We will be staying in a well-equipped cottage with a panoramic view of the surrounding rocks, located in a quiet forest environment further from civilization. The surroundings offer walks in nature. An interesting feature of the cottage is a huge outdoor hot tub with a remarkable view of the landscape, ideal for warming up during winter evenings in the mountains! Our participants will be accommodated in bedrooms with four beds with bathrooms in a common area. Every room has its own balcony or entrance to the terrace area.
The venue includes:
  • Dining area.
  • Terrace and outdoor areas.
  • Reliable internet connection.
  • Hot tub for 25 people.
  • Table tennis, billiard and other activites.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the same location every day and we are also providing vegetarian options.

Since the accommodation is in a mountain area, there is no close shop to reach by foot. However, we’ll arrange trips to the supermarket by car as necessary.

What can you expect?

The Program

The program is design as to provide a hands-on introduction into the topic of media literacy, from the perspective of a daily use and navigation of the media as well as from the perspective of actively contributing as a creator of worthwhile content. We do not expect you to have a wide portfolio of previous knowledge in the topics beyond that of a regular user. In turn, we will try to encourage the building of competences and responsibility of media literacy through non-formal learning methods which are fun and interactive. Since we will use computers for some parts of the program, it is advisable to agree beforehand with the members of your national team to have at least one laptop per group.

The Networking

Through cooperation, you will get to know other like-minded people from different countries. Each international training course is an amazing opportunity to gain new contacts, share experiences and make life-long friends. Please note that several workshops will be given by people working today in various positions in the cyber security world; we will organise spaces where you will be able to ask them any questions you may have.

The Unexpected

Well, we shouldn’t spoil everything, right? Each of our events is a little different because of the participants who join them. You will have the chance to contribute with your own ideas which can have a significant impact on this event.

Social program

In our organisation, it’s become a tradition that each national group will take turns presenting different aspects of their culture during the national evenings. In perspective of helping this project to be as memorable as possible, take this opportunity to prepare a unique and extraordinary presentation and think of it as an excellent way to represent your cultural background for the rest of the participants. Don’t be afraid to be creative! It’s highly recommended to bring some typical food, snacks or drinks for others to taste during the intercultural evening. Beyond that, we will make sure to make your stay even more memorable through thematic evenings and parties which will allow you to unwind after a day of activities.

How to get to the event?

Travel

You must arrive before late evening on 9.1. to the venue and have to participate in the full duration of the event. You can get to village Súľov – Hradná by flying to Vienna, Bratislava or Košice, then taking a train to city Žilina, from there to take train or bus to city Bytča or direct bus to village Súľov – Hradná. We will provide more travelling information once you have been selected to join the project and help you to plan everything in details. If you need more information, please contact us. We will cover your travel cost up to a certain limit. You will receive your reimbursement after you have provided us with all the documents within a month after the event. If you’re economical, it’s possible to get your full travel expenses covered.
The travel reimbursement limit depends on the travel distance. The upper limit per country is:

Slovakia (10-99km): 20€
Estonia (500-1999km): 275€
Greece (500-1999km): 275€
Sweden (500-1999km): 275€
Spain (2000-2999km): 360€

Since every project that we are carrying out is based on our own interests and skills, you can expect us to be highly motivated and energetic. Our extensive experience makes us more flexible and helps us make meaningful adjustments to the program. This means that if something doesn’t fit or seems boring, we will always have a plan B and C.

As a participant of this event, you will receive YouthPass – a certificate of non-formal education recognized all across Europe that allows you to describe what you have done and learned. On top of that, it can be a great way to stand out at a job interview or when applying to a university, not to mention the part where you get to show off to your friends:)

This project is supported by Erasmus+ program. This enables us to keep the participation fee very low and even remove it for people who are in financial difficulties. We know it sounds too good to be true, feel free to check out the reviews:)

Not at all. We try to focus on non-formal learning methods. This means that all activities are interactive and you will usually work in groups.

Everyone who comes from the eligible countries and is 18 to 30 years old is welcome to apply. There are no prerequisites, we actually welcome people who have no prior experience at all. Also, this event is not political. We don’t care if you hold conservative or more liberal views. Just be friendly and cooperative, we’re all here to learn, make friends & have fun!

The participants are selected based on their motivation and interest in the topic. There is no catch, you just need to be sincere and honest in your application. Also, if you’re not selected in this project, it’s more likely that you get selected for the next ones. 

Questions such as this one will be answered by the organisers or your group leader. Don’t worry, we will help you find the best possible option!

We will cover your trip to and from the project destination. There are some limits that apply, this is based on your travel distance. These limits are mentioned in the information above. If you buy the tickets early enough, it’s common to get your travel 100% covered.

After the event, all participants will fill the reimbursement form where you will be asked to upload the travel cost documents (itinerary, boarding passes, invoices etc.). The reimbursement process usually takes between 1-2 months. Remember that we will help you on every step of the way.

Nope. You will not be forced to do anything that you’re not comfortable with. But it’s definitely a great place to step our of your comfort zone. This is going to be a journey in your personal development:)
