Catch the Ball

  • Type: Name-game
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Group Size: Small (5-15), Medium (15-30)
  • Duration: Short (1-15min)

Materials:

  • A tennis ball (or a softer ball of a similar size)

Instructions:

Participants stand in a circle. The facilitator says the name of one participant and throws the ball to them. That participant then says the name of another participant and throws the ball to them. This goes on until everyone’s name was said.

Variations:

  • Participants say their own name before throwing the ball to someone. This can be used at the beginning of the activity.
  • When throwing the ball to someone, participants say the name of another participant who gets the ball next (e.g. John throws the ball to Hannah, but says “Jim”, so Hannah has to throw the ball to Jim, while saying the name of some other participant).
Things to keep in mind…
  • Remind participants to be careful when throwing the ball. They shouldn’t use any unnecessary force.
